About 3 years ago now, I began a journey into abstract expression, AKA action painting. In an effort to relieve my stresses and frustrations of the moment, I found the kind of art I am in love with creating. It is all about the act of creating and the emotions behind that creation. Until that point, I had been playing around with various things and simply celebrating the ability to create fulltime. I did lots of "should do's" and lots of what I thought would be "the thing to do" to find my place in the art world. That's great, but if you don't paint what is in your soul, you will never be your authentic self and the art is not really "you". One fine day, I had the urge to throw paint that I had not had since high school. There was a sense of urgency. I began to paint with abandon - no thoughts or brushes getting in the way- all hands- creating a really big mess and loving every minute of it. I heard a voice deep down inside telling me, "This is what you are supposed to do". I've barely touched a paint brush since that day. I stopped doing the "should do's". The painting above, Spin Cycle, was that beginning painting. Since then, I have honed the emotional process and created an entire series of work that is soon to be exhibited all in one place. None in the series is like the one above, but I keep it around as a reminder of the beginning of finding who I am as an artist. Each painting is full of emotion and laced with happiness, sadness, joy, excitement, and many memories. Stay tuned for details about that. Coming soon…THE COLORS OF EMOTION
